How to get better at word search.
A word search is simple to explain and surprisingly deep to play well. These are the habits that make a real difference, whether you play on paper or in an app.
Scan the grid, not the list
Beginners read a word, then hunt for it. Faster players do the opposite: they scan the grid row by row for unusual letters and let the words reveal themselves.
Rare letters (Q, X, Z, J, K in English) appear in few words, so spotting one in the grid usually pins down a word immediately.
Look for pairs
Double letters (LL, EE, OO) and fixed pairs (QU, TH, CH) stand out in a grid. Find the pair, then read in all eight directions.
Read backwards and diagonally on purpose
Most missed words are the ones written right to left or bottom to top. When a word will not turn up, deliberately scan for its last letter instead of its first.
Use the list as a checklist
Cross words off as you find them. Near the end, the remaining words tell you which letters to look for, and the empty regions of the grid tell you where.
Take the timer away
A ticking clock makes you tunnel on one word. Without it you scan more widely and finish faster. That is why Words with Mia has no timer, and why its daily puzzle waits for you.
